If you want to increase your SEO, focus on the pages that are ranking in positions 7-50 for keywords. These are the pages with the most potential for optimization opportunities. By improving these pages, you can improve your overall ranking and visibility.
Google sees these as quality pages, but not as good as your competitor’s.
By tweaking these few pages, your search engine optimization will continue to climb — for ranking and your entire site.
These are the web pages you should optimize for. You don’t need to spend time or money optimizing the pages of your site for keywords that are currently in the top ten results. Focus on the web pages that appear lower in the search results. These are the web pages that will benefit from SEO the most.
Step 1: Export All Keyword Rankings in Positions 1-50
Export all of your website’s keywords in ranks 1-50 using SEMRush. This will show you where your site is ranking organically and where you can make improvements to your search engine optimization.
Your contact information will copy into a spreadsheet, but if you’re using different software, you can paste it there instead.
Step 2: Filter URLs Ranking in Positions 1-6
If you have pages that rank in 1-50, you have high-performing content that is ranking for more than one keyword.
If you have pages ranking in the top 6 positions for multiple keywords, it’s best to leave them and focus your attention on pages ranking lower. By doing this, you can identify areas where you can make improvements and see a greater ROI for your efforts.
But, using the data you collected, you cannot start by looking at pages that are ranked 7th or lower.
It’s likely that some pages in those positions are also ranking in higher spots. These shouldn’t be changed.
Focusing on optimizing your top-performing web pages for keyword rankings in spots 7 and below is unnecessary.
To filter out URLs that rank in the top ten, there is a simple process that any marketer can implement — no fancy software or special tools needed: Create a header. Copy the top-ranking page. Paste it into the search field in the header. Uncheck the box next to it. Repeat for every other high-ranking page.
If your site is ranking for lots of different keywords, this can take a lot of time.
But, don’t fret, because high-performing pages are very likely to still rank for more than one keyword. As you filter through each landing page, you’ll likely see that many URLs will disappear with each you eliminate and that this process doesn’t take too long.
After you’ve completed this audit, you’ll only be left with pages that rank in 7 and up. These are your highest-priority SEO issues.
Step 3: Create a Pivot Table

Creating a pivot table that lists all the URLs ranked for a given keyword will help you see which pages are performing best for that query.

Now that you understand how to identify your top-performing pages and which pages are only getting traffic from lower search ranks, you can dive into optimizing these low-ranking pages.
A page can be very close to being ranked for a high-value key term, but it may not actually contain the keywords in the copy.
This indicates that your content is valuable and Google has ranked it accordingly. If you were to include the keyword in your content, it could potentially rank even higher.
If the page actually used the keyword, it would rank much higher.
If a web page is showing up in the 7th-20th position, you can increase that web page’s search engine rankings by adding more keyword phrases.
One way to improve your content marketing is by using tools like SEMRush or ÜberSuggest to find new, relevant keyword phrases that your target audience is searching for. This can help your content rank higher on search engines, and bring in more organic traffic.
Do you have more than one page about the same thing?
This can confuse search engines if you repeat the same information across multiple pages.
Since Google is having trouble determining which pages are more important, it’s affecting how these pages rank.
When the same keyword is targeted by more than one page, this is known as “keyword cannibalism”.
If these pages have consecutive positions, it could be a sign that your SEO efforts aren’t as effective as you’d like.
Tip #2: Competitor Keyword Gap Analysis
Competitor keyword gap analysis is the act of analyzing what your competitors are ranking for and comparing it to your own.
A keyword research process where you identify which of your top competitors are outranking you for important search terms. You can do this by researching your rankings in SEO tools like SEMRush. By finding which terms you are missing, you can develop a strategy to out-rank your competitors.

The final area of focus when conducting keyword research is ‘low’ or ‘poor’ performing terms.
Keywords that you and your competition are both targeting, but your competition is beating you.
