The Open source vs. SaaS fight — It’s a SaaS mashup world, get with it!
I am a huge fan of open source and software as a service, but I often get frustrated by the level of tension that they both create. It seems like all this bickering is just an effort to make themselves seem more credible when in reality it’s nonsense.
In software, it is very easy to copy and share digital files. This makes the commodity products of the past obsolete because they are so easily duplicated for free. Open Source chooses a socialist approach by giving away their product in order to help build community ownership; SaaS companies choose capitalism through charging money but still having one end goal: more stuff at lower cost.
The truth is that open source developers are just solving an economic problem for a very specific market segment, and they’re having fun doing it. However, only companies with strong IT capability can participate in this type of development because the costs associated outweigh any possible benefits when done internally without SaaS (Software as a Service). Regardless of what you think about these types of software projects: there’s no value to be found from old technologies or services—you’ll get more benefit by remixing them with newer technology and services. It’s time we all caught up; it’s going to take everyone working together if we want our businesses succeed.
