When it comes to software development, the agile development process is the key to success. I’ve personally used this methodology on several projects and can attest to its effectiveness. Following the agile process ensures that your project will be completed on time and within budget.

This blog post will discuss the agile development methodology and its significance in software development.

Agile Development Process

In software development, agile development is an iterative, incremental approach to software development characterized by short iterations, rapid development cycles, and constant feedback.

The agile development process is designed to be flexible and allow changes to be made quickly and easily.

Agile development is often used with other software development methodologies, such as extreme programming (XP) and Scrum.

Agile Software Development Methods: Scrum and Kanban

Agile teams can use many methods to develop Software. Two methods are the most popular.

Scrum methodology

Agile Scrum Methodology (simplest and most popular) is the most used and widely used. According to the State of Agile Report, 56% of teams use Scrum. It provides a framework for creating and maintaining complex products.

These are the basic principles that make it work:

  • Scrum revolves around the responsibilities and support provided by the Scrum Master to the Product Owner to prioritize and identify goals. The “Product Backlog” is where the details of the goals are added.
  • The backlog is reviewed by a cross-functional team who decides which Sprints will deliver “potentially shippable incrementals” of Software. A Sprint can last up to four weeks.
  • Daily standup meetings allow for clear communication among team members to keep them up-to-date with developments.
  • Each Sprint is completed. The team reviews the backlog and meets for a demo to show the functionality to the Product Owner and other stakeholders.
  • Retrospective meetings are the last step in Agile Scrum. This meeting is where the team discusses areas that need improvement.

Kanban method

Kanban is a popular method for development teams. This method focuses on continuous delivery, keeping things simple, so the team doesn’t get overwhelmed.

It works like this:

  • With the help of Kanban boards, teams can visualize their workflow. These Kanban boards are made up of columns and cards that help teams make their work visible and show it to others.
  • The best thing about Kanban is that everyone knows how many they can or will do in a sprint. Nothing will be added. This helps to balance the workflow and keeps teams motivated without becoming burnout.
  • The Kanban approach ensures that the team knows what’s coming to prepare half the tasks ahead of time. This helps to keep priorities in check.

Stages of Agile Development Process

The following are the phases of the Agile model:

  1. Gathering of requirements
  2. Design of the requirements
  3. Construction/ iteration
  4. Quality assurance/ Testing.
  5. Deployment
  6. Feedback

1. Gathering requirements: This phase is where you must define the requirements. It is important to explain the business opportunities and plan for the time and effort required to build the project. This information will help you determine your project’s technical and economic feasibility.

2. Design of the requirements: Once you have identified the project’s scope, work with stakeholders to create requirements. You can use the UML diagram or the user flow diagram to show the new features and how they will fit into your existing system.

3. Construction/ iteration: Work can begin once the team has defined the requirements. Designers and developers begin to work on their projects. This project aims at deploying a working product. The product will go through various stages of development, so it has minimal functionality.

4. Testing: This phase is where the Quality Assurance team reviews the product’s performance and searches for bugs.

5. Deployment: This phase is when the team issues a product to the user’s workplace.

6. Feedback: The last step after releasing the product is feedback. The team receives feedback and then works through it.

The Roles in Agile Software Development

These are the key roles and responsibilities of agile teams:

Product owner

The Product Owner is the Stakeholder in the project. The Product Owner understands the project from the perspective of the Stakeholder. Product Owners play a crucial role in directing product development and project progress.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Product backlog management
  • Release management
  • Stakeholder management

Scrum master or team leader

The team members’ main link between the Scrum Master or Team Lead. The Team Lead? Scrum Master follows the instructions of the Product Owner and supports each team member’s progress.

Key Responsibilities

  • Organizing and managing daily Sprint and Scrum initiatives.
  • Collaboration among team members regarding changing requirements.
  • Motivating team members to deliver results.
  • Assisting in project management, such as facilitating collaboration and facilitating meetings.
  • Protect team members from external distractions and interferences.

This role also has additional responsibilities such as:

  • Implementing changes
  • Finding the right resources for a project often requires coordination between stakeholders.
  • Product Owners can optimize their backlog planning to maximize performance.

Development team

The Development Team includes experienced individuals, directly and indirectly, involved in product development. The team is made up of a variety of roles that are responsible for taking an idea or requirement and turning it into a tangible product for the end-users.

Key Roles

  1. Product designer
  2. Programmer
  3. Tester
  4. UX/UI specialist

Key Responsibilities

  • Delivering the work during the Sprints following the Product Owner’s requirements.
  • Take items from the Product Backlog to Sprint Backlog and commit to delivering the value during the Sprint.
  • Self-organizing to accomplish their tasks.

Stakeholders

Although they may not be directly involved with the development process, the Stakeholder plays key roles and can impact the Scrum team’s work. A stakeholder could be:

  • The client is the end-user of the product.
  • Business Executives (Employees for the company for which the Software is being developed).
  • Production Support staff (Testing staff).
  • Investors
  • External Auditors (Appointed By the Client).
  • Scrum Team members from Associated Projects and Teams.

Lower risk & faster ROI

Agile reduces risk by allowing for changes in mid-development and regular testing. Teams can produce predictable products by iterating on a project rather than following a rigid end-to-end project plan. They can quickly correct a problem mid-project rather than discover it at the end.

User stories are an important component of agile development. These allow clients to provide feedback on features throughout a project. This helps ensure each feature is valuable and usable for the end user.

These processes work together to minimize risk and enable teams to deliver value faster, leading to faster ROI.

Technical best practices for agile organizations

Scrum is the fundamental process for teams to collaborate, plan, and deliver, but it does not address technical best practices, organizational standards, or defining and driving agile cultures.

Many technical best practices today include the definition of the software development lifecycle (SDLC) and implementing DevOps processes. The SDLC contains guidelines for writing code, managing software assets, and developing technical standards.

Continuous testing and DevOps automation such as CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code(IaC), or continuous testing allow for a more reliable path towards production.

Other practices include shift-left security, feature flagging, and canary releases.
